Course / Course Conditions
The John Rose Oval is a 400m flat and smooth concrete skating surface. There are expansion joints at the start and end of each turn. These make loud noise when skated over and are at sometimes uneven. Please use caution and skate at the level of your ability.
Racing Rules
All competitors are expected to skate safely and fairly and not interfere with other skaters. Interfering, impeding, and/or cross-tracking fouls, whether intentional or not, may result in reduction in rank or outright disqualification at the discretion of the officials. Any action or threat that compromises the safety of competitors may result in disqualification. Skaters are reminded to allow adequate space and to give a verbal announcement when passing, and if finishing in a pack, skaters must stay in their lanes to prevent cross-tracking or interference fouls. These skate rules are based on applicable FIRS/CIC regulations as well as the additional rules published here. Always warn slower skaters that you are passing and on what side you are passing them on.
Should you have a protest please contact the MSC board member officiating the event that evening. The race judges will resolve protests involving awards prior to the online posting of results.
Penalties
At the discretion of officials, offenders may be issued warnings or penalized via reduction in rank (loss of place) or outright disqualification. The Chief Race Official will be the final arbiter on any protests.
Safety First
Identification (race number) and helmets are mandatory. Without a helmet you will be disqualified and not allowed to skate. Elbow, knee guards, and wrist guards are strongly recommended. For your safety please be aware of the track conditions. For safety reasons, the use of headphones, i-pods, cellular phones, roller-skis, and/or ski poles is prohibited. In the advent of a crash or so other reason that a race needs to be halted mid-competition, a whistle will sound indicating that ALL racers should exit the track and the race will resume once the incident is resolved.
Water / Energy Drinks
No water bottles are allowed on the track. Please try not to spill any liquids as the surface becomes slippery for those skating behind you. Please make a conscious effort to gently toss cups/bottles in the designated trash areas. Food products are not allowed on the course for safety reasons.
Point System
Races will be held by division and a point system based on finish placement will be in effect for each distance raced that evening. Those points will then be tallied and the total points for the evening will then be used to award omnium (overall) points. Omnium points will be used to determine divisional leaders, Madison, TTT winners, as well as divisional upgrades.
Per Race Points:
- 1st 7
- 2nd 5
- 3rd 4
- 4th 3
- 5th 2
- 6th 1
- 7th and up: Each participant will receive 1 point
Omnium Points:
- 1th 10
- 2nd 8
- 3rd 6
- 4th 4
- 5th 2
- 6th and up 1
Upgrades
Divisions will be ranked in the following order from lowest to highest:
- Junior
- Women
- Fitness
- Advanced
- Pro / Elite
Juniors, Women and Fitness atheletes desiring to upgrade to the next higher division must earn 20 Omnium points and be approved for upgrade by the head official on the event night.
Athletes in the Advanced Division wishing to upgrade to the Pro/Elite Division must accumulate 25 Omnium points and be approved for upgrade by the head official on the event night.
Upon upgrading, half of the athletes current omnium points will be added to their new division. Also, the athlete will also be eligible to select a “prize” from the prime bank.
Why up grade? Because the racing is safer and better and the prizes are bigger and better!
Downgrades
Athletes may be downgraded for the following reasons:
- Unsafe skating
- Lack of placement within current Division
- Lack of ability to contribute to the race in their current Division
